Caving in Cova Fosca: an adventure beneath the Serra de Segària

In the Serra de Segària, in Ondara, Cova Fosca offers a caving experience that combines the exploration of a natural cave with abseils, underground chambers and narrow passages.

Over approximately 3 hours, you’ll explore the inside of the cave accompanied by our instructors, tackling different descents and discovering how the environment changes as you make your way into the deeper sections of the cave.

What is the route through Cova Fosca like?

The activity begins in the Serra de Segària, from where we’ll make our way to the entrance of Cova Fosca. Before entering the cave, the instructor will explain how to tackle the different sections and how to use the equipment during the descents.

Once inside, we’ll begin exploring the cave, alternating between sections of underground exploration and several abseils located relatively close to one another. This makes for a dynamic route in which vertical progression plays a major role.

The abseils in Cova Fosca

One of the main attractions of this activity is the different descents you’ll encounter along the route.

First abseil: 15 metres

The first descent is approximately 15 metres and provides your first experience of rope-assisted progression inside the cave. Before starting, the instructor will explain how to position yourself and how to descend correctly.

Second abseil: 20 metres

Further on, you’ll reach the highest abseil on the route, at around 20 metres. Its narrower walls make it one of the most distinctive sections of Cova Fosca.

Third abseil: a narrower passage

The third descent adds something different: you’ll progress between particularly narrow walls, creating a technical and enjoyable section that feels completely different from the previous abseils.

Is caving in Cova Fosca difficult?

The activity is rated as easy difficulty and is suitable from the age of 9, although the route includes abseils, uneven terrain and some narrow spaces.

Throughout the experience, you’ll be accompanied by a qualified instructor who will explain how to tackle each section and supervise the group’s progress. You should be able to walk over uneven terrain, follow the instructor’s directions and not suffer from vertigo or claustrophobia.
